Radioactivity – of natural origin or man-made – is omnipresent and yet eludes sensory perception and thus our consciousness. Since the Fukushima Daiichi reactor disaster in 2011, Saori Kaneko and Richard Welz, as an artist duo, have been on a search for traces of radioactivity in our environment in their joint project MADE BY US, both in Japan and in Germany. In their artistic works, invisible radiation manifests itself in a variety of ways. At the interface between artistic field research and documentation, installations are created that explore the medial possibilities of photography and printing techniques in new ways. In doing so, MADE BY US strips the landscapes on display of their deceptive neutrality and seeks a conscious engagement with the consequences of nuclear technologies.
