DESCRIPTIONS is part of the 2018 Frankfurt Book Fair’s cultural program featuring Georgia as its guest of honor. Organized by the Georgian Video Art Archive (Video.Image) and hosted by AF, the show explores themes of independence and dependence – essential aspects to consider when discussing cultural undercurrents in Georgia. In this environment shaped by political and social turbulence, various cultural expressions and artistic approaches have emerged – one of which is moving image. The medium in its broader understanding presented in the exhibition – including cinema, various forms of documentary, fictional footage and video – provides a broad and all-engrossing overview of the development of Georgian socio-cultural discourses. The selected works illustrate diverse time periods and discourses and how they have been approached by Georgian artists, often accompanied by a metareflection and contextualization of the medium itself.

The exhibition is part of the ‚YOUNG_GEORGIAN_CHARACTERS@AF‘ festival.

For one month, AF is opening its doors to honor Georgia – the guest country at the Frankfurt Book Fair – with a variety of cultural events. Two exhibitions – ‘The Future is ours’ and ‘DESCRIPTIONS’ – book presentations, screenings, discussions, a symposium and a party will give an insight into the diverse cultural scene of Georgia. A particular emphasis will be placed on the emerging voice of Georgia’s youth culture and their complex relationship with history and tradition.
